Amish Country Backroads
Tour Highlights
Unique mix on this tour! Gentle people, simple life, a mega cavern under Louisville’s zoo, a horse-drawn canal boat, entertainment at Warther’s Carvings, and Notre Dame.
Itinerary
Departing from the Dallas/ Ft.Worth Metroplex and Little Rock
Day 1 – Memphis
Come; discover the diversity of the largest Amish community
in the world, as we learn about their country-life experience in Ohio and Indiana.
(D) Overnight: Memphis, Tennessee
Day 2 – Louisville Mega Cavern
Before settling into our hotel on Louisville’s waterfront, we’ll see a new
attraction, the Mega Cavern under
the city’s zoo. No walking required, as a jeep-pulled tram ride takes us
through an expanse so great it spans under a number of roadways above.
Our host for the next two evenings will be the Coshocton
Village Inn, in the heart of an historic canal town. On the second day Roscoe Village
offers a living history tour, escorted by costumed interpreters along red brick
paths. Witness the forging of iron as done in the 1800s, print on an 1800s
printing press, attend class in a one room schoolhouse and much more. No trip
to Roscoe Village is complete without a relaxing
cruise along a 1-1/2 mile stretch of canal in the horse-drawn canal boat. The captain will provide insight into life
on the canal during its 1800s heyday. This afternoon we’ll have an interesting
winery tour with dinner to follow at the Ravens
Glenn Winery.
Day 3 (D); Day 4
(B,D) Overnights: Coshocton,
Ohio
This area of Ohio has the
largest concentration of Amish settlers in the United States. Their woodworking,
hand-crafted quilts, gifts, and harness shops offer visitors a glimpse into the
simple lifestyle so cherished by these gentle people. Sightseeing trips to
small towns such as Mt. Hope, Kidron and Berlin will allow us to learn more about
the Amish lifestyle, as well as
taste their delicious cheese, chocolate and other home-style cooking. A
cyclorama at the Amish and Mennonite
Heritage Center is a must see to learn about their history. Rub elbows with
local Amish in a flea market and livestock auction in the village of Mt.Hope.
Lunch is furnished at Mrs. Yoder’s Kitchen. Reminisce about the “good ole days”
at Lehman’s Hardware. Evening
entertainment and dinner is at Warther
Carvings. We’ll dine in the room where his ivory carvings are displayed,
proclaimed by the Smithsonian as “priceless works of art.”
(B,L,D) Overnight: Dover, Ohio
Day 6 – Buggy Ride/
Amish Home
The bustling village
of Shipshewana welcomes
us to its picturesque 19th century storefronts - this might be a
good place to shop for a unique gift to take home. Listen to the clip-clop of
an Amish buggy that takes us to our
in-home Amish dinner.
(B,D) Overnight: Shipshewana,
Ohio
Day 7 – Notre Dame
Campus
Leaving Amish Country, we’ll make a morning stop at the University of Notre Dame Visitor Center, providing an intriguing look at the famous
University’s history. The gilded Golden
Dome atop the Main Building is visible from
just about any point on the campus and many nearby roads.
(B, D) Overnight: Effingham, Illinois
Day 8 – Farewell
Dinner
Upon arrival in Little
Rock, we bid farewell to any of you leaving the tour
at this point. The others will have a special
farewell dinner this evening.
(B,D) Overnight: Little Rock, Arkansas
Day 9 – Homeward
Bound
We’ve enjoyed scenes from yesteryear and now it’s time to
make our way home to the present, perhaps bringing with us hints of preserving
the good times from the past.
